The Australian government is to introduce a new product that uses flying fish as the base of a new shark fin sauce.
The new product will be sold as Shark Fin Soup, and will be available from July.
The new product is called Fly Fish, and it will be introduced as a new brand alongside the existing Shark Fin Sauce and Fish Sauce, the new product launch documents state.
The product will feature “fish that are capable of diving underwater in a high-speed, underwater-hunting manner,” according to the documents.
“Fly Fish is the most advanced fish in the world, but we know how hard it is to get them to dive,” Fisheries Minister Michaelia Cash said in a statement.
“As shark finning continues to decline in Australia, it is vital that we continue to use this important fishery to protect the health and wellbeing of our local communities.”
The launch documents for the product state that the fish is “slightly tougher than the existing shark fin”, and that it is “not as fishy as some of the other shark fin products currently on the market”.
It is the second time that a shark fin has been introduced into a shark sauce.
In 2016, the Government announced it would ban the use of shark fins for shark fin Soup, but the new Shark Fin Sauces will not be banned.
